Brewed Awakenings provides organic, farm-to-plate foods, Fair Trade coffee and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere that is conducive to initiating conversation and making new acquaintances. Our mission is to be a coffee house that nurtures body, mind, and spirit. A restaurant where you can eat every day and be healthy. And a gathering place that encourages a culture of open-minded communication. With the belief that the way we do business will strengthen our community and even farther reaching ecosystems, we provide you with organic locally grown food and serve the finest organic Fair Trade coffee, teas, and chocolates.
Joan Foster (pictured) launched Brewed Awakenings as a small coffee cart located in a cooperative grocery store in downtown Grand Rapids in 1996. When the Cooperative’s Board of Director’s voted to dissolve, Brewed Awakenings found a new home in the MacRostie Art Center. For eight years the Coffeehouse grew under the roof of the MacRostie Art Center, until the space could no longer contain us. In July of 2006 Brewed Awakenings moved 2 blocks east to our own building at 24 NE 4th Street. It was a leap of faith, but we followed the mantra “Build it and they will come.” We loved designing and building the space, and hope you enjoy your time spent here.
